Wry Smile

Philippians as a countercultural guide for joy

Wry Smile. A sort of smirk. A knowing smile. May seem strange. But Paul saw the world and his own experiences from a different perspective. He didn’t look at how things were but what they could be and what they would be. And more importantly, what God was doing behind the scenes. For example, Paul didn’t see prison as a barrier to the Gospel but a way for it to spread. He didn’t see death as something to fear but welcomed because of Jesus. He didn't see anxiety as something that had to own him but a reason to pray and lean into God. Paul even cracked the code and figured out how to be content no matter what. Philippians is a countercultural guide for joy. A wry smile is the smirk of the mature in Christ in the face of a confusing world.
