The Image Of God

John 14.8-9

Philip said to him, “Lord Show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’

(Recording of Live Sermon will appear below at 11AM on 6/21/2020)

Communion

~Those who trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are invited to receive communion~

Every week we remember and retell the Gospel by receiving communion. The bread represents Jesus’ body given for us. The juice represents the blood He shed for our redemption.

Our Father wants us to move from mere knowledge about Him, to actually knowing and seeing Him. The Gospel shows us the very depth of how much He loves us. Communion is God’s invitation to enter more deeply into His love. Communion is a tangible opportunity to retell of Jesus’s saving work and believe the Gospel in deeper an deeper ways.

As you receive communion, consider repeating the words, “The Father loves me so much He gave His Son for me.”

Giving

~An opportunity to worship God with our finances~

In response to God giving us Jesus, we give. This is a wonderful and important part of our worship. Take this time as an opportunity to thank God for your daily bread. Take time to connect your giving to what God is doing in and through the church community. Our hearts follow our treasure; may God use your giving to fuel your worship of Jesus.

While we are not publicly gathering, this link will give you three options to give.

Sing - “Good Good Father“

*Closed captioning (CC) is available

Verse 1
I've heard a thousand stories
of what they think you're like
But I've heard the tender whispers
of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you're pleased
And that I'm never alone

Chorus
You're a good good father
It's who you are, it's who you are,
it's who you are
And I'm loved by you
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am

Verse 2
I've seen many searching
for answers far and wide
But I know we're all searching
For answers only you provide
'Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word

Bridge
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us

Verse 3
Love so undeniable
I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable
I can hardly think
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
Into love, love, love

Closing Prayer

~Feel free to use the following prayer or pray however you are led~

(A prayer from Scotty Smith based on 1 John 3.1-3)

Dear heavenly Father, on this Father’s Day, it’s a great joy to affirm that you are the Father we’ve always longed for and needed. The best earthly fathers offer a great taste of what it means to be your beloved children, but they can never be to us what you are. Our hearts overflow with thanksgiving, as we cry with joy today, “Abba, Father!”

Thank you for adopting us through the finished work of Jesus, and for robing us in Jesus’ righteousness and forgiving ALL our sins. Thank you for freeing us from our slavery to sin and our orphan-like ways, and for giving us the Spirit of Sonship, a secure place in your family, and an inheritance that can never spoil or fade.

Thank you for being the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. Thank you for promising to complete the work you began in us, and for always disciplining us in love—never shaming, chiding, or withdrawing from us.

Lastly, Father, we thank you for the spiritual dads you’ve given us—the gospel-fathers who help us discover more and more of the multi-dimensional love of Christ.

So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ merciful and mighty name.

Benediction

~The word benediction literally means “good (bene) speaking (dictio).” Close your service by speaking a good word to one another~

As you see Jesus you see the Father.

Cookies & Coffee

~Have a cookie (especially all you little ones!) and engage in fellowship at a distance~

On Sunday we would typically walk over to the Commons after the service for cookies, coffee, and fellowship together. We miss that time!

While we are meeting online and encouraging social distancing to keep our community safe, let’s engage in fellowship from a distance. We encourage you to do a “social hour” with your friends from church by texting or calling them. Let’s stay connected!

Reflection / Sermon Application

~Feel free to do this now or after the service, and/or throughout the week~

Take a few minutes to reflect on the sermon. Consider how you might apply this lesson to your life in practical ways. We encourage you to engage with your family or call/text a friend from Redeemer to discuss the sermon application questions below:

  • What comes into your mind when you think of God?

  • What is so profound about the request: “Show us the Father”?

  • How is seeing Jesus seeing the Father?

  • How can you practically put this text into practice in the coming week?
